Two years ago, photographer Steve Hart assembled a group of jockeys past and present for a unique photo shoot. A couple of the old timers had trouble squeezing into the gear, but here is the result of Steve’s efforts.
Back row. Kevin Moses, Hugh Bowman, Darren Beadman, Tommy Berry, and Ron Quinton.
Front row. Clark Little, Malcolm Johnston, Kevin Langby and Bill Camer.
Clark Little used to ride one of Sydney racing’s favourite horses. Pirate Bird was a 1960’s stayer who would go out and lead by 25-30 lengths in his races. Clark got him home many times, to the delight of the crowds.
Bill Camer was a brilliant lightweight jockey who won many majors including two Stradbrokes. One of them was the great filly Wiggle who won the sprint as a two year old. Who would be game enough to try it today?
Bill also won the 1970 Stradbroke and Doomben Cup on the massively talented Divide And Rule.
Next week Steve captures the same kind of shot at Newcastle, and have we unearthed a couple of legends in this one.
Well done Steve!
