There’s nothing like a stirring two horse duel.
The 1990 Villiers Stakes at Randwick provided a thriller between two visiting Queenslanders, and Steve Hart was there to capture the moment.
Post Elect on the inside with Malcolm Fitzgerald hard at work, won by a breath from Don’t Play ridden by the late Neil Williams.
Post Elect was trained by Lawrie Mayfield-Smith and won $303,000 from 9 wins and 9 placings. One of his best runs was a fifth beaten only 3.5 lens in the 1991 Doncaster won by Super Impose.
The runner up Don’t Play was a darn good horse trained throughout his career by Noel Doyle. The chestnut gelding raced 89 times for 15 wins and 22 placings ($700,000).
He won 4 Listed races and was placed in an Epsom, a George Ryder, a George Main and a Stradbroke (beaten a nose by Robian Steel).
Malcolm Fitzgerald was a talented rider whose health suffered as a result of excessive wasting. He retired over twenty years ago, and has worked ever since for Racing NSW.
After a number of years in a tutorial role with apprentice jockeys, he recently took up the management of a thoroughbred rehoming farm near Taree.
The property is owned by RNSW and provides care and agistment for retired racehorses awaiting new homes.
