Mark Bradley sent me another classic piece of racing memorabilia. This one was snapped in the winner’s circle at Randwick on Boxing Day of 1967.

Gary Moore, barely sixteen years of age, unsaddles Tremendous after winning the Summer Encourage Hcp (1 mile) for visiting Melbourne trainer Bill Murrell. At Rosehill ten days earlier, Tremendous (Wilkes-Caretta) had given Gary his first winning ride in Australia.

Young Moore began his apprenticeship with Alec Head in France, but later transferred to Tommy Hill in Sydney. Towards the end of his indentureship he returned to France, where he became number two rider for the powerful Maurice Zilber stable.

Gary Moore went on to achieve great distinction on the world stage. He won the famous Arc De Triomphe of 1988 on Gold River and the great English classic the 1000 Guineas on Ravinella in the same year. His list of French classic wins is very impressive.

He was a seven time winner of the Hong Kong jockeys premiership, many of his winners being trained by his father George Moore. When Gary turned to training in later years he consolidated his reputation with eight Macau premiership victories.

G.W.Moore is currently training at Rosehill and the smile is just as infectious as it was the day he won on Tremendous at Randwick.
