It was a proud and excited Trevor McKee who joined Thayne Green and Helen Lusty to lead their wonder mare Sunline back to scale after the 1997 Doncaster.
Steve Hart was kind enough to send me this photo of one of Sunline’s thirteen Group 1 wins.
The racing world was shocked and saddened last week to learn of the passing of Trevor McKee at age 81. The great horseman had been battling ill health since suffering a stroke late last year.
He trained Sunline to win 32 races in three countries, for record prize money of $11.3 million, since surpassed by Winx and Makybe Diva.
Trevor was always accessible to the media during Sunline’s remarkable reign as the Australasian queen of the turf. I found him gracious, humble and informative in an interview situation.
I’ll never forget that free running, superb equine athlete who won two Doncasters and two Cox Plates. In many cases she made the pace and broke the hearts of the opposition.
Sunline who died in 2009 and her part owner and trainer Trevor McKee, left an indelible mark in racing history.
