Bradley Photographers snapped this one of a visiting South Australian trainer at Randwick in May 1965.
Bart Cummings was 37 years of age and still training exclusively out of Adelaide. He opened his Flemington stables in 1968, but it wasn’t until 1975 that he established a Randwick operation to be known as “Leilani Lodge”.
This photo was taken six months before Bart was to win his first Melbourne Cup with Light Fingers - little did he realise another eleven would follow.
The maestro trained 266 Group 1 winners which were included among his overall tally of 762 stakes winners.
He has been the recipient of many honours and awards. Perhaps the most significant is the special Cummings precinct at Flemington known as Saintly Place. Features include a bronze statue of the iconic horseman and the Bart Cummings Museum.
His thoughts at the moment this photo was snapped would have been dominated by the horses he had at Randwick on the day.
He had no comprehension of the fame he would achieve over the next fifty years. Bart died on 30/08/2015 at age 87 years.
