This one was snapped by Ron Bickley at a Newcastle meeting in the early seventies.

Domestic airline TAA sponsored a race callers day and commentators were flown in from all parts of Australia.

In this pre Sky Channel era, each got to call one race on a radio network and the course broadcasting system.

From left to right it was Edgar Alvin (TAA), John Tapp, Elizabeth Langton (TAA), Rod Gallegos, Vince Curry, Des Hoysted, Bill Collins, Geoff Mahoney and Adelaide’s Bert Day.

In perusing the photo during the week, I was saddened to recall that Vince, Des, Bill and Geoff are no longer with us - great commentators and wonderful contributors to the racing industry.

Rod Gallegos retired recently from Sky Racing Radio and is living at Canberra.

For aviation history buffs, TAA (Trans-Australia Airlines) became Australian Airlines in 1986 before its merger with Qantas in 1992.

Where have the years gone?
