STEVE HART’S 2024 XMAS VISIT TO CHILDRENS’ HOSPITALS

It was way back in 1995 when Steve Hart and former jockey Malcolm Fitzgerald floated the idea of making an annual Christmas visit to the children’s wards at Randwick and Westmead Hospitals. They gained instant support from prominent jockeys, while Racing NSW and the Jockeys Association agreed to fund the purchase of quality gifts.

The original Santa Claus was the late Nathan Berry who died under tragic circumstances in 2014. The job was immediately filled by twin brother Tommy who continues the role to this day. Steve Hart continues to be overwhelmed by the ongoing support of jockeys and Racing NSW officials. Not only does Steve put a great deal of time into the organisation of both visits, but also takes his trusty camera along to capture many magic moments. The accompanying Steve Hart photo highlights a very affable Tommy “Santa” Berry flanked by young jockeys Mollie Bourke and Jessica Drury with evergreen veteran Kerrin McEvoy standing behind.

Jess Drury will shortly resume race riding after a long injury enforced layoff. With 170 winners already on her CV, Jess is certain to bounce back under the astute managership of Steve Hart himself.
